Public Health provides information, advice and support on a range of issues including health protection, resilience and health promotion. Smoking Matters Orkney, the local free confidential smoking cessation service is based in the department.

Public Health is often described as the science and art of promoting and protecting health and well-being, preventing ill-health and prolonging life through the organised efforts of society. Areas of public health activity include health protection, screening and health promotion. In Orkney the public health department also supports the development of organisational and community resilience.
