Spring Fling & Easter Egg Hunt
Spring. Say it out loud. Makes you feel happy, doesn’t it?
Chances are you also thought about daffodils, newborn lambs, Easter eggs, bunnies and crisp, sunny days out shopping with your chums in Kirkwall town centre. Maybe you just thought about chocolate, but that’s ok too.
Yes, the season you were most looking forward to, when packing up your Christmas decorations during the gloomy days of early January, is finally upon us.
A cause for celebration? Most definitely. That’s why Kirkwall BID are staging what promises to be a fabulously fresh and invigorating Spring Fling event on Saturday, 1 April.
You’ll have noticed the special date, but rest assured our Spring Fling is about purchases and pampering – and possibly Prosecco – rather than 1 April pranks. However, we’d respectfully suggest it would be foolish not to be there, given all the wonderful seasonal offers and attractions you’re sure to encounter in town.
Fifty shades of yellow
That got your attention, didn’t it? As sequels go, our Spring Fling is certainly hot stuff. Granted, we can’t guarantee steamy weather on the day, but one thing’s for sure – Kirkwall will be yellow, not grey, with shops throughout the town embracing our Spring Fling colour scheme. If you love daffodils, you’re in for a particular treat, with loads of our brilliant businesses getting right into the spirit of spring with special seasonal window displays. Maybe you’d like to wear something yellow to help brighten the mood even more. It’s up to you, though our Spring Fling does represent a fine opportunity to give that bold yellow statement piece an outing, at last.
Spring styles & tasty treats
Kirkwall’s shopkeepers enjoy the spring just as much as you do. In addition to all that lemony hued loveliness on the day, you’ll find the town’s businesses just bursting at the seams with exciting new products and the latest spring collections, along with special promotions and discounts, food tastings and fresh, spring themed menus.
Luckily, the Kirkwall BID team will be based outside the Bank of Scotland for the duration of the Spring Fling, in the official BID gazebo, and they’ll be delighted to tell you more about what’s on offer. Once you’ve come past the gazebo to say hello, take a wander through the town and be delighted, surprised and amazed at just how much our local businesses are offering, right on your doorstep.
There’ll also be live entertainment during the event, see times below, with performances from local musicians and the talented youngsters of Just Dance and the Highland Dancing Group. The gazebo is also the place to head if your kids would like their faces painted. They can try some Easter themed crafts in there too.
10am – 4pm – BID Gazebo (located outside Bank of Scotland, Albert Street), kids crafts and treats
11am – 3pm – Get your face painted by Lianne’s Face & Body Art in the BID Gazebo
11am – 3pm – Pavement chalk art competition (outside For Arts Sake, Bridge Street)
11.30am – 12.30 – Helga the Rabbit (Albert Street)
12.30 – Highland Dancers, performing outside St Magnus Cathedral
3pm – Just Dance, performing outside St Magnus Cathedral
* Bridge Street & Albert Street will be closed to traffic between 10am – 4pm for safety reasons.
Easter Egg Hunt
Yet again, Orkney’s very own Easter Bunny, Helga, has been hiding 61 Kirkwall BID’s precious eggs around town and we need your help to find them. Ok, so we actually asked Helga to hide the eggs because looking for them is loads of fun and a great activity for the all the family. And there are prizes too!
If you’d like to enter the hunt – and we really hope you will – you’ll have to pick up a special form from the Kirkwall BID gazebo during Spring Fling. Forms are also available from Trek & Travel, Blue Joe’s, WHB Sutherland’s Pharmacy and the Orkney Library & Archive or download it here easter-egg-hunt-form
Exactly where each egg is hidden within the shop is a secret, but that’s where the fun begins. Helga will be making an appearance at the Kirkwall BID gazebo, but she’ll definitely not tell anyone where the eggs are hidden.!
Find a minimum of 20 eggs, if you can, and then return your completed entry form to Trek & Travel, Blue Joe’s, WHB Sutherland’s Pharmacy by Tuesday 18th April. Each completed entry form will receive a free Easter themed reward, and be entered into a prize draw to win a £20 gift voucher and a Giddy Limit t-shirt & mug from the Orcadian Bookshop. Terms & Conditions apply.
Keeping the heart in Kirkwall
Hopefully all of that’s put a spring in your step and given you something to really look forward to for 1 April. We do hope you’ll come along and get involved in the Spring Fling event – and the Easter Egg Hunt if you’ve got kids – as shopping local does make a hugely positive impact on the wellbeing of Kirkwall. With an incredibly diverse range of independent businesses in our town centre, you’re sure to find whatever you need and, as a bonus, you’ll be shopping in one of the most sociable and beautiful town centre environments in the world. That’s official, because we said so.
