Mile of Style

Mile of Style

Mile of Style is the first of BID’s events for autumn/winter: a week-long promotion of all the fashion and style that Kirkwall has to offer! Follow our social media channels from Monday 28th September until Sunday 4th October, for this online week highlighting everything stylish in Kirkwall: From Beauty to Beers, Furniture to Food, Homestyle to Hair, there is something for everyone in the Mile of Style.

Quote from Kirkwall BID Chair, Duncan Maclean

“It is a year on since Kirkwall won ‘Britain’s most beautiful high Street’ and since we cannot celebrate as normal, we decided to do it ourselves online by creating ‘Mile of Style’.

When you hear the word ‘STYLE’ you immediately think ‘FASHION’, but style is more than that, and Kirkwall has so much to offer. To encapsulate the wide range of businesses in the Kirkwall BID area, we are having a different theme each day.”

The week has been broken down into the following key themes:

Mon 28th - Sept Food and Drink

Tues 29thth - Sept Health & Beauty

Wed 30th - Sept Arts & Crafts

Thur 1st - Oct Interiors & Furnishings

Frid 2nd - Oct Pre-Loved

Sat 3rd - Oct Fashion & Design

Sun 4th - Oct Staycation Style – Accommodation, Hotels & Restaurants and the general beauty of Kirkwall town centre.

Melanie Miller, newly appointed Kirkwall BID Manager explains how businesses are getting involved, “We have asked our members to create social media content for us to share throughout the day. Many businesses will fit into more than one theme, some may be able to fit into all 7 so it’s a great opportunity for them to show all they have to offer to the public. We have over 5000 followers on social media, and we’re hoping that all of our members will find a way to get involved as a reminder to everyone what a great range of businesses we have in Kirkwall and to encourage them to shop local first, a message which we’re keen to promote across Orkney.”

Some of the Kirkwall businesses are creating videos and tours of their premises, offering sneak peeks at new stock and showing us what goes on behind the scenes. We’re looking forward to a look around some of the lovely self-catering accommodation in Kirkwall, as well as the hotels and restaurants. Other businesses may be sharing ‘meet the staff’ type posts or videos, or ‘Throwback Thursday’ images of their business or building in the past versus now.

Melanie continued “We’re especially excited to be asking some well-known faces around Orkney to be taking over our Instagram and Facebook Stories each day. Each of these people have a keen interest in their category, so we’re really looking forward to seeing what they find around Kirkwall to share with us.”

Kirkwall has a lot more than just shops however, some office based businesses have fantastic stylish interiors that not everyone may get to see, and vehicle style changes all the time – a neccesary accessory for many of us!

“We’d love if the public could get involved in the Mile of Style, maybe by sharing some of their favourite purchases bought in Kirkwall BID area, shop windows, architecture around Kirkwall, favourite corners of hotels and images of favourite foods in restaurants, just tag @kirkwallbid and #mileofstyle2020

When asked to sum up the Mile of Style event, Mel stated “Mile of Style is a great opportunity for us as a diverse business collective to come together and showcase all that our beautiful town centre has to offer. I hope that as many businesses as possible will take part and make it a week to remember.”
