We are proud to care for the animals of Orkney, in sickness and in health. With our accumulated local knowledge we understand Orkney life, and we do what we can to make life as easy as possible for our community, with examples of this in action every day.

We have 9 Veterinary Surgeons, 3 Veterinary Nurses, an Animal Nursing Assistant, a Student Veterinary Nurse, a Practice Manager and 9 Reception/Administration staff.

We all regularly under-go training and Continuing Professional Development to ensure we provide the best possible care and advice for our clients.

With 3 branch surgeries in Orkney, Northvet covers all areas including the outer isles.

Our Kirkwall surgery is where the majority of our staff are based. This surgery re-opened in July 2009 after a complete refurbishment and has excellent facilities for diagnosis and treatment.

Our large animal surgery in Harray operates from large purpose built premises. At this surgery we have also installed stocks where horses can be safely secured for examination and treatment.

Our third surgery in Stromness is open for small animal consultations 3 times per week. We don't like to keep you waiting so both our Kirkwall and Stromness surgeries see animals by appointment.

All 3 of our surgeries have free parking on site. We provide a 24 hour emergency service 365 days of the year.

Out of office hours please call us as normal and our dedicated emergency team will respond immediately.

- Proud to care for Orkney’s pets, farms and horses

We can trace our history on the island back to 1861 and we understand the role we play in life on our island. We have three branch surgeries in Kirkwall, Stromness and Harray, and cover all of Orkney including the outer isles. All of our surgeries have free parking on site and provide a 24-hour emergency service 365 days of the year. If you need our help out-of-office hours please call us as normal and our dedicated emergency team will respond immediately.

We’re proud to care for the pets of Orkney, in sickness and in health, from our main surgery in Kirkwall and branch practice in Stromness. We offer a comprehensive range of services and prioritise investing in our team and facilities to help our clients to avoid trips to mainland Scotland in search of expertise. This includes modern diagnostic equipment, vets with further qualifications in areas such as orthopaedic surgery and therapy options such as acupuncture. We also provide nurse clinics including post-op check-ups, nail clips, anal gland expression and weight checks.

All our experience has gone into creating our Best of Health wellness plans – designed to provide the highest standard of preventative care for pets across the islands. We know how important it is to have trusted relationships with your veterinary team. That’s why our Gold and Silver members enjoy unlimited consultations with our vets and nurses.

Our Best of Health wellness plan breaks down the cost of preventative healthcare into 12 monthly payments, with an annual saving of up to £180 – and our prices won’t change over the course of your year’s membership, combining peace of mind with fantastic value.

- Working in partnership with Orkney’s farms

We understand that the health of your livestock is essential to your farm’s success. That’s why we offer a comprehensive range of services designed to support both the well-being of your animals and the success of your business. From preventative care to emergency services, we are committed to providing expert veterinary support for farmers across Orkney.

Our service is fully ambulatory with regular visits to the North and South isles. We also have dedicated space and facilities at our Harray branch to see farm animals. We provide a 24/7 service for all emergencies, including lambings, calvings, prolapses, down cows and emergency advice.

We take a proactive approach to farm health. Annual health plan reviews allow us to work closely with farmers to identify key areas to improve animal health, welfare, farm efficiency and productivity.

Other routine procedures we offer includes pregnancy scanning for beef and dairy cattle, including investigations of individual and herd fertility issues, bull and ram fertility testing includes a full reproductive examination, lameness and foot trimming with our fully portable rollover crush, vaccination programmes and advice, postmortem examinations performed either from our dedicated post-mortem room at our Harray branch or on farm. We provide accurate and reliable same-day results on faecal samples for sheep and cattle, across all species of worms, liver fluke, rumen fluke and coccidia. Our fully qualified RAMAs offer advice on appropriate treatment. We provide a comprehensive service for cattle synchronisation and AI, advising on the best programme and timings, with our AI technicians on hand to ensure a successful outcome.
