Kirkwall BID Calls for Volunteers to Support a Vibrant Year of Local Events

Kirkwall Business Improvement District (BID) is inviting enthusiastic local volunteers to join its Events Support Team for the 2026 programme, helping to deliver some of the town centre’s most popular and lively community events.

Kirkwall BID represents around 250 businesses in the heart of the town, working to promote, support, and enhance the town centre as a thriving destination for residents and visitors. The organisation delivers a varied calendar of activity designed to boost footfall, strengthen the local economy, and celebrate Kirkwall’s unique character.

Supporting a Busy Events Programme

The Events Support Volunteers will work alongside BID’s Events & Administration Coordinator (the newly appointed Miriam Fraser) and wider team to help bring events to life. Opportunities include assisting with marquee setup, coordinating giveaways, supporting performers and participants, and helping to pack down at the end of the day. Events are diverse, energetic, and attract a wide range of audiences.

Volunteers will play a hands-on role in ensuring events run smoothly, safely, and professionally - contributing directly to the welcoming atmosphere that Kirkwall town centre is known for.

What Volunteers Gain

Volunteers will benefit from:

• Being part of a friendly, supportive team delivering exciting local events.

• Gaining practical experience in event operations and logistics.

• Developing communication and interpersonal skills in a real-world setting.

This opportunity is ideal for anyone looking to build confidence, gain experience in events, or simply get more involved in the local community.

Training and Support

Before their first event, volunteers will meet with the Events Coordinator for a full briefing on duties and expectations. During setup and delivery, volunteers will always have a member of the BID team on hand for guidance and support.

Strengthening the Heart of Kirkwall

The team works together with local businesses to ensure events are well-promoted, well-attended, and aligned with member expectations. Volunteers will be part of this collaborative effort, acting as ambassadors for Kirkwall town centre and helping to build positive relationships with businesses and visitors.
