  • Kirkwall BID Announces Baton Holders for the King’s Baton Relay - Saturday 11 July

Kirkwall is preparing to welcome one of Scotland’s most exciting national events, following the successful bid by Kirkwall BID to host a stage of Scotland leg of the King’s Baton Relay. The visit will give residents, businesses, schools, community groups and visitors the chance to experience the energy and celebration surrounding the internationally recognised relay, arriving almost exactly one year after Orkney proudly hosted the 2025 International Island Games.

The King’s Baton Relay is a major part of the build‑up to the Commonwealth Games, carrying a message from His Majesty The King across communities throughout the Commonwealth. The Scotland tour celebrates local culture, achievement and community spirit, bringing people together through sport, heritage and civic pride.

Kirkwall was selected after a strong application from Kirkwall BID, highlighting the town’s rich heritage, welcoming atmosphere and proven ability to deliver memorable public events. In Kirkwall, the baton will be carried through the town centre by BID’s charity members and key volunteers, showcasing the organisations that support the wellbeing and resilience of the local community.

Kirkwall BID is delighted to announce the baton holders for the 11 July relay:

  • Finlay Scott, Island Games Gold Medallist
  • Sarah Scarth, Deputy Lord Lieutenant
  • Hannah Rendall, Voluntary Action Orkney
  • Rhoda Walker, THAW Orkney
  • Stuart Lamont, Mind‑On
