Pooch Friendly, Poo Free Kirkwall
Back in April 2025, Kirkwall BID hosted our very first Dog Friendly Day, and what a success it was! We handed out free dog poo bags and handy dispensers, and the response from the community was overwhelmingly positive.
Dog owners told us things like:
“This is so helpful, I hate when I’m left short.”
“Aww, thank you so much. This is so helpful.”
That feedback made it clear, small gestures can make a big difference! So, we’re making Dog Friendly Day an annual event in our calendar.
Launching Pooch Friendly, Poo Free Kirkwall
On Saturday 30th August, we were excited to launch our new initiative: Pooch Friendly, Poo Free Kirkwall.
Three of our BID’s dog-friendly businesses are now acting as hosts, offering free rolls of dog poo bags to anyone in need while visiting town.
Where to pick up your free bags:
William Shearer
Begg Shoes
The Fossil and Mineral Shop
To make sure everyone benefits, we kindly ask that visitors take one roll per person at a time.
Why We’re Doing This
Keeping Kirkwall clean is part of our pledge to Scotland Loves Local Week, but it’s also about promoting responsible dog ownership. With the help of our local businesses, and dog owners like you, we can make Kirkwall an even friendlier and cleaner place for everyone.
Look out for our posters around town, reminding us all of good ownership habits. And if you’re visiting with your four-legged friend, don’t forget to check out our full list of dog-friendly businesses in Kirkwall here: Dog Friendly Kirkwall.
Together, let’s keep Kirkwall Poo Free and Pooch Friendly!
