Celebrating Scotland Loves Local Week in Kirkwall

Kirkwall BID was delighted to take part in Scotland Loves Local Week, which celebrated its 5th anniversary this year. Over the course of the week, and across two beautiful, sunny Saturdays, we had the pleasure of thanking everyone who chose to shop local and support Kirkwall’s fantastic businesses.

On Saturday 23rd August and Saturday 30th August, the Kirkwall BID team set up our tent on the Kirk Green, outside St Magnus Cathedral. With the sun shining and the streets bustling, Kirkwall was alive with shoppers, visitors, and a real sense of community spirit.

Throughout both Saturdays, we showed our appreciation by giving out canvas shopper bags, stainless steel water bottles, pens, badges, and sweets and treats for kids. Shoppers who had supported local businesses during the week were invited to bring along their receipts and receive a free thank-you gift from the BID team.

One of the highlights of the week was chatting with shoppers about what they love most about Kirkwall and why shopping local matters to them. We encouraged people to share their favourite parts of the town, local businesses they love, and what makes Kirkwall such a special place to shop.

These wonderful messages were then proudly displayed in the window of the currently vacant We Frame It shop on Albert Street, creating a positive and eye-catching display for passers-by to enjoy. It was a great way to celebrate local pride while also bringing life and colour to an empty shopfront.

Scotland Loves Local Week was a fantastic reminder of the important role our community plays in keeping Kirkwall’s high street thriving. Every purchase, no matter how small, helps support local jobs, keeps money in the local economy, and ensures our town centre remains a vibrant place to live, work, and visit.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared their thoughts, and chose to shop local. We loved celebrating with you.
