Orkney International Science Festival's Molecule Hunt Competition 2021

Saturday 28th August - Wednesday 8th September

OISF's Virtual Molecule Hunt 2021

This will be the twelfth successive year of the Molecule Hunt in Kirkwall.

Due to the ongoing situation with Covid-19 we have found it necessary to repeat the process we used last year and adopt a virtual approach for this year’s event. We are particularly grateful for the continuing support of the Kirkwall BID in hosting instructions and relevant images on their website. The activity will run from Saturday 28th August until noon on Sunday 12th September.

As usual we have selected 20 businesses in Kirkwall town centre. These are listed below and their locations are shown on the map. Each of these has been assigned a molecule which is associated with the nature of the business. A model of each molecule has been constructed and images of each of these molecules, along with a description of how it is used, is shown here. Each business has taken a photograph of their molecule and posted this on their Facebook page or website. As some of the businesses don’t have a suitable FB page the picture of their molecule in its location is being displayed
on the Kirkwall BID Facebook page – these businesses are: Cycle Orkney and Visit Scotland (Tourist Information Centre).

Your challenge is to visit the Facebook page (or website for those that don’t have a FB page) for each business in turn and identify which molecule is on display. You then complete the entry form by entering the name of the appropriate business beside each molecule name and submit the completed form as an attachment to: [email protected]

Don’t forget to add your own contact details and any comments you wish to make about the competition.

All entries received before noon on Sunday 12th September will be checked for accuracy and correct entries will be entered into a draw to select the winner. The winner will receive a Molymod® molecule building kit http://www.molymod.com/sets.html, kindly donated by Philip Spiring of Spiring Enterprises.
